1966 johnson generator

I have a 1966 Johnson super seahorse 40hp (Rkl-28b) I got it running good this past weekend but I need to find a generator for it because it does the electronic shift. I have been looking all over the internet and have been unsuccessful at finding one. Does anyone know where I can find one? Or something that can be substituted? Thanks

What is wrong with the one you have? They are pretty sturdy. And little understood.

I live North Dakota. I tested it on the boat witb a multi meter and wasnt getting any voltage. I took it apart and the armature came apart in pieces of copper wire and black dust.

Well that pretty much indicates it has had it. Does it have the correct voltage regulator, 10 Amp? Look-alike car regulators are not 10A and can burn up the generator armature.

I have not checked that. Where is it located?

It could be on the motor or in a box mounted on the transom. Follow the wires from the generator.

If I am not mistaken, 1966 was the last year with a junction box mounted in the boat. Voltage regulator is inside the box cover. For sure, 1967-up had the regulator in the lower motor cover, below the carburetor.
