I have a '66 Evinrude 80hp model 80693 serial #E01784. When I look for parts for it on marineengine.com it doesn't show this model number. Anyone help me.

80652 is standard shift, short shaft
80653 is standard shift, long shaft

80682 is Selectric Shift, short shaft
80683 is Selectric shift, long shaft

80692 & 80693 are same as 80682 & 80683 except for color. One is blue, the other grey. Which is which??? I dunno, which is yours?

In the '66 service manual it says 80693 is 5" longer, gray. Is this what is called a long shaft?

Yes, but the color has nothing to do with shaft length. It was just a choice. Some people thought Evinrude Blue clashed with their boat color.

Ok. I've attached a picture of my lower end. You can see a broken piece. Will this greatly affect it and can a new piece be welded on? Thanks DSCN1503.jpg

Maybe. It could make bubbles that get around the prop and cause cavitation. Then maybe you won't see any ill effects at all. Yes, a good welder can fix it. A local prop shop here also does an excellent job of fixing those. Or at least they did---I haven't checked lately to see if they still do it.

Aluminum.----------You can likely repair that using epoxy / fibreglass / fine metal screen / J-B weld or some similar technique.------Or take it to a shop and $ to repair that.

Nope, it isn't a duck. I'll see if I can dig up the correct name. Or just give them a call. They will work with you.

EDIT: It appears to be called Seal Grey. But still call to be sure we are on the right track.

Here is another very popular link but they are in Canada: http://www.nymarine.ca/evstyle2.html

Here's the response I got from Reprotint.

Yes, and there is a seal grey 66-67. The picture you sent however is not that color. That is that OMC GreyGold and unusual to see on an 66 Evinrude, as it was primarily a Johnson color. However, with the racing lower unit that explains a lot of things. We do not carry that color currently, however if you supply us with a part we will match it and send you one free 12 oz spray can of paint along with the part.

What does he mean by racing lower unit?

That is not a racing lower unit !!-----That was the standard lower unit back then on those motors.---------------One style was electric shift and the other was standard mechanical shift.--------------Folks just are not aware of what is what I would say.

It might just be the lighting on my picture that makes it look more gold. I think I'll go with the seal gray, what do you think? BTW, I this motor is going on a '60 Starcraft Jupiter(see pics). Also, I'm looking for a stern side aluminum transom corner piece( I attached pic of port side piece). Any idea where to find one?

You have been a great help. Any idea where to find transom corner piece? I've looked on Ebay. Any good boat online boat salvage yards you know of.

I need to replace my throttle cable. I'm confused on how to measure. Do I measure the entire length end of the guides or just the black cable itself. DSCN1509.jpg

How long have you owned this motor ?-------Have you heard the motor run ?----------Some cables have the part number on them with the length.

Got it last week. It ran but not that great when I picked it up. It sat for over a year, so I figured it may need carb cleaning and fuel pump rebuilt. Today I thought I'd check cold compression. Engine turns over very slowly and negative battery cable get very hot. What do you think?

Not surprized that you have a " new to you motor " --------------step # 1 is a compression test and you can pull it over with a rope to do that.-------------You could remove the 4 bypass covers on the side of the block to inspect pistons and rings.-----Any water in the gear oil ?-------Do not spend any money untill you know the condition of the motor.--------Paint is the last concern.

Cleaned all battery connections and that took care of my negative wire getting hot.
Cold compression check. Three @ 100 one @105. I don't think that's too bad. No water in gear oil. Took carbs off and inspected and cleaned. Removed fuel pump and took apart. Found the diaphragm spring was missing, so that's probably why it wasn't running correctly. Will order new pump parts and I bet it runs better. How do you measure the throttle cable? There are no numbers on it.

You measure them from trunion to trunion. That's the little black pieces you see on the cable. One you can adjust and the other you can't.
