I have what I believe is a 1966 Evinrude 18 Fastwin and the other day it got stuck in forward for no reason. I could shift to N but nothing happened and if you put in reverse it would die HARD. I then put it back in N and laid on it hard for about 200 feet the it kicked out and worked fine while I was putting it back on the trailer. Dose anyone know what may have happened or what I may need to do? And yes the lower unit is full of fresh grease. Thanks for your time and help.

"Dusty..... If you by any chance removed a philips screw from the lower unit, therein lies your problem. That screw is a long shoulder type screw that is actually a pivot point for the inner shift linkage lever. If so, you'll need to remove that skeg to correct that situation as your explanation above would indicate that damage may exist now within the gearcase.

The large slotted screws, one in the skeg and another farther up the lower unit are the drain/fill and oil level screw holes."
