I need to replace the drive shaft seal. I have removed the original seal and the new seal is different it is the correct number but I am not sure how it should be installed. The seal is to prevent water from getting into the gear case so the seal has to be to the water pump side ( I think) can someone tell me the correct way to install this seal

If a single seal.... spring side down.

If a dual seal.... 1st seal in. spring side down.... 2nd seal in (top one), spring side up.

There is an o ring for the shift shaft, that is often the culprit too. It is more difficult to replace, however. Once you get drive shaft seal in, try filling the lower unit with say a 5/20 weight and hang it upside down in the sun. The shift shaft should not leak.

Yup. Find just the right size punch, rod, what have you......and push it out from the bottom, the housing bore will allow you just the right size to enter, yet push out the bushing/retainer without hurting it. When you put the new o ring in, make sure when you tap the bushing back down, it puts the correct "crush" on the o ring so the shaft, when lined with oil, will move smoothly, yet not too tight.

You can also remove and install that seal with the right size picks. All you do is change the o-ring. Done it many times.
