"Anybody know about the 1966 E

"Anybody know about the 1966 Evinrude big twin 40 hp, mine only goes in reverse right now, 300.00 for a new forward gear is it worth purchasing or should I junk this outboard and look for something newer. I got offers of used forward gears of $100.00 but I don't know if I should buy them if this outboard is worth it."

its got the controls and igiti

its got the controls and igition switch right up front buy the steering wheel if that answers your ?.
Thanks

If it has the original cover " BIG TWIN " is a manual shift and a " LARK " model would be electric shift.

"Mario.... No, that doesn'

"Mario.... No, that doesn't answer my question. If the engine is a manual shift model, there will be a gear shift lever on the starboard side.

Standing in back of the engine, facing the spark plugs, starboard would be the right side.

What is the model number of that engine?"

"sorry been out removing mercu

"sorry been out removing mercury mariner 150 hp from another boat, now back to this one it does have the big twin cover on it, an this is on the motor it self, model # 40652B serial # E02774,
Thanks for your help Joe,
Mario"

"Mario... That model number in

"Mario... That model number indicates that the engine is indeed a 1966 model, but unfortunately I do not have the 1966 Evinrude Parts manual at the moment. Back to my original question.... does that engine have a shift lever on the starboard side, that is two control cables attached to the engine, one for the throttle and one for the shift lever..

I'm trying to determine if you have a electric or manual shift engine."

"Yes sir, there is a shift lev

"Yes sir, there is a shift lever on the right side from behind the motor, only one cable hooked up to it to shift gears, the throttle is towards the front on left side.
Thanks for your responce Joe."

"That's a manual shift low

"That's a manual shift lower unit then and the forward gear wouldn't approach the price you stated, or is the mechanic including labor in that price, and if so, how much labor? You haven't said exactly what your problem is other than it does not go into forward gear.

Are you saying that you only have reverse and neutral, or are you saying that forward gear engages but jumps out of gear?

Have you or anyone else removed the philips screw from the lower unit skeg? If so, the inner shift lever has dropped out of its location.

If that philips screw hasn't been removed, then I'd suspect play in the shift linkage or the shift cable is misadjusted, something of that nature.

To check for play, remove the side plate from the long exhaust housing (hsg between powerhead and lower unit), then the inner plate. You'll see the shift connector that connects the upper and lower shift rod. Hold that connector firmly and then try to move the shift lever. That will tell you if play exists or not."

"Joe,

"Joe,
I emailed the company that said forward gear is $300.00 and this is what they sent back, (Mario
Part number is 381810, retail $305, not sure what we quoted before, but we can sell you one currently at $175, make sure you mentioned the quoted price. When you order)

Sound right to you as far as part # the place is called SeaWay Marine here in Seattle, Wa.
yes the boat when running, I'll put it in forward and you hear a clicking sound then nothing, I took the lower unit off and the forward gear is worn on inside where clutch dog engages the gear. Thanks Joe for your expertise."

"Mario.... That gear (3818

"Mario.... That gear (381810) fits the 28hp,33hp,35hp,40hp models from 1958 right up into the 1980's, possibly later.

I'd suggest that you check around various outboard shops, eBay, etc for a more reasonable price. Of course you'll also need a clutch shifter dog.

Be sure to correct any "play" problems and make sure to adjust the shift properly for even engagement on both gears so as to avoid a repeat of the problem.

NOTE: On those models, including yours, forward and reverse gear are the same. If reverse gear is okay, you can transfer the forward bushing to the reverse gear thustly making reverse gear to now be the forward gear.

I'm pretty sure that the shifter dog can be reversed also. If the present reverse side is okay and there are no machined grooves on either side and if there is no lettering that states prop end, it can be reversed.

I don't normally approve of switching gears or reversing shifter dogs BUT sometimes it's the way to go due to prices.

I checked.... I don't have those items (gear or dog).

When time permits, visit my store (copy/paste) at: stores.ebay.com/Evinrude-Johnson-Outboard-Parts-etc?refid=store"

"Thanks Joe, I asked the Seawa

"Thanks Joe, I asked the Seaway rep ifr these gears were reversable and his only rerply was "no" thay are not, I knew the gears looked pretty familiar but did not know all you had to do was switch the bushings, thanks fror your help, and I will definetly check out your store."
