1966 40 hp Johnson hard cranking

will do. finally got it started. it helps to read labels. my suspected starting fluid was actually contact cleaner. can is identical. doh. anyway, compression check was 60 top, 70 bottom. not the greatest, but... fresh gas, fresh plugs and a squirt of start fluid and off it went. it does crank a little hard but only takes a couple rotations and its running.

????-----------A 66 model you say ??------Where are the pieces for the hot air choke set-up ??--------Running that motor on muffs may not be the best thing for it.-------On the electric shift models that generator must be working to maintain the battery.----When motor is in gear there is a constant draw on the battery of around 2 amps.

I'm suspecting it's the starter. Wiring is good, also has a new starter solenoid as of last fall. Running dual 1000 amp batteries atm. Working well enough to hit the water in the morning. Thank you everyone for the replies.

The hot air setup is still connected to the original power head. This power head is a replacement. No idea what year it is, but the rest of the outboard is an RK28 and was a long shaft. I converted it to a short.
