i have a 1966 inboard 327 and

i have a 1966 inboard 327 and a 1966 mercury lower end....boat has not been cranked in about 3 years....can't get motor to turn over...i've put oil in spark plug holes and a breaker bar on crank....how can you check to see if it might be the lower unit that might have it locked up....

" Sounds like its' the engine thats locked up. Does the prop turn freely when in neutral? If so, its' not the lower unit. If it hasn't been turned in three years, has it been stored outside? If so, I would be willing to bet that its' going to need a rebuild. You might be able to spray some WD-40 into the cylinders generously to get it break loose and maybe even use a drill with a long bit down the distributor shaft to turn the oil pump and pre-lube everything, but again, once it does break loose, the corrosion in the cylinders will most likely break a few rings or at a minimum hinder any compression you would hope for. I could be wrong and hope I am but good luck with it. The safest thing is to re-build it. A 327 is a strong engine but scorring the cylinder walls by forcing corroded pistons makes it nothing more than an ancor.
