1966 18hp Rude 18602 question

I have a 18602 that runs great at all speeds.Spark perfect and timing perfect. The only problem I had last time out was when I tilted the motor up to adjust the trim(or beach it,cant remember)the motor would not restart for a while. I think it was flooded and I was going to pull the plugs to check but I just waited a while and it restarted after about 5 minutes. Does anybody think I may have a problem with my float or needle and seat? If yall think I need to look at this carb, what is the correct kit? Thanks-Blair

Could have been a temporary glitch. But if you want to go into it, the carb kit is 493071 (With float) or 18-7043 (W/O float). I highly suggest getting the float.

The pump and lines are new, maybe I will take it out and fool around some more and see if I can replicate the issue. If I do go after the kit does the 0398532 have what I need,a couple options came back. This puppy is going to get my 13'3' tinny cooking at sea level. I got 23mph at 5500'.Thank you for the advice.-Blair

You can get a adjustable high speed jet will make it nice for fine tuning at different altitudes. You may want to check the high speed jet in the bottom of the float bowl it should be a 63D for sea level and you decrease two sizes per 5000ft elevation. If that engine was jetted for higher altitudes you want the larger jet for running sea level. At 5500ft get a 61D for better top end.

Not sure if this one works but you get the idea

So I ran er this after noon and I could not recreate the issue so I think it is ok. However when I opened it up it was really screaming. By screaming I mean it had a real screaming noise at high RPM. Sounded like it was coming from the gear box or flywheel area(hard to tell) on the port side, which is donated from a 15014. I drained the gear oil and it looked good,no metal or water.I don't remember this sound last time out but it could be normal I guess.I just sealed and serviced it at the end of last year, and it is pumping water fine with a new impeller. Can I please have some thoughts on this?I changed the prop nut to a plastic deal which was original from the 18602,maybe the split pin was causing the sound because it is sticking out to much? Thanks-B

Did you change the prop? Could be just running at a higher RPM? As far as it possibly flooding the only time you should need to choke it is on the first cold start of the day. After it has stopped for a while crank on the starter first and if it dont start just bump the choke quick touches while cranking. They flood real easy when warm.

No I didn't change the prop, and when I had the lower apart the gears looked good. Ive only got 3 hrs on it since then.

So upon further examination there were some metal shavings when I drained the rest of the gear oil. I had filled it with quicksilver 90wt the blue stuff so I thought I would refill it with regular gear oil. I pumped some through the top to flush the unit and that is when I noticed small flakes.Very small ones but definitely more coarse than the filings I am used to seeing on magnetic drain plugs for manual transmissions etc. What do you think?I have several other lowers I could set up but I have already put the parts and time into this one.
