1965 super seahorse 40

hey all, just picked up 68 mfg with 40hp super seahorse, eng is a 65. had her running, 1st trial out, she would only run with with eng hood off, but ran well for 3hrs non stop took her in a river, got back towards dock, slow speed, died, would not start again, turns over fine, does this motor have points?? just got ID, other owner put in coil, plugs wires. any info thanks Jack

Yes it has points. Parts diagram is available at http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php. As for the only runs with hood off check for exhaust leaks between the power head and the mid tower.
