1965 --- 18 HP Evinrude fuel pump questions.
Problem is that the outboard motor will not run at top speed. When I put the new pump in the engine ran great until beginning of September, now it wont run past 1/2 it normal RPM. The engine will run at top rpm for about 20 seconds then starts to die out. If I run the hand pump by hand the engine will run at top RPM continuously. How can test my fuel pump to see if it needs replaced already?
1. I put on a new fuel pump in May of 2014.
2.I have used the boat about 50 hours this summer.
3. Can someone tell me how long these little pumps should last.
4. When i disconnecct the outlet fuel line from carberator the fuel just runs out over the end of the fuel line.
5. Should the fuel come shooting out of the outlet side of the fuel pump.
6. I have checked the the fuel lines for leaks by holding my finger over the outlet hose where it would enter the carb and pump the hand pump but dont see any leaks.
7. If I run the hand pump by hand the engine will run at top RPM continuously.
8. Does anyone know of a youtube that shows how hard the fuel flow would look like if the fuel pump were in good shape.

Have you checked the inlet screen on the fuel pump for debris? There is also an inlet screen within the fuel tank on the pick-up tube. Removal of the 4 machine screws on top of the tank will give ready access to the entire pick up assembly if it is an original fuel tank. Pumps last a pretty long time usually, as in many years on my engines. Leeroysramblings.com has been a great resource for me and he has taken time to post pictures and describe problems common to OMC outboards.
