hello i have a motor i found and it was froze up got it free its move good. just haveing trouble with the point and connecter. cause the top dead center doesnt line up on the top . where it set the gap and idea if i can fix the timeing ?

anything will help i run but it back fire and i did a tune up and nothing happen now no fire . im lost with this . i wanna get it running cause like to see old motor come back to life again
thanks anything info will help

If it backfired, check to see if the wires going to the spark plugs are reversed.

ok check that too i just found out one the contact point was broken replace it with a tune up kit on it and trying to figure out the fuel mixture is ? is there a way the time can be change cause the flywheel where its show top dead center is off alittle will that make it hard to make it run ? and i'm trying my best cause i want the old motor to come alive lol . anything thing will help

can someone tell me if i useing the right fuel mixture i'm useing 50to1 . also the plate on the flywheel that move the carb handle down there a line on it. doesnt meet the line would that throw the timeing off? i'm learning as a work on it like to see old motor come back to life again

Carburetor must not open before the roller meets that mark on the cam.---------50:1 is the correct fuel mix.--------Ignition timing can be checked with a timing light.---------Spark must occur when mark on flywheel is between the 2 vertical marks on the magneto plate.----Check both cylinders.

ok when i look at the armature plate the line the carb roller is pass the line is that good or bad cause i set the point when it was like that and the timing on the top is off before it meet top dead center ? so 50:1 is the right fuel mixture ? do i need to adjusted the plate to make the line meet with the roller then redo the points ? thanks guy all the info helps alot

The points are adjusted using the 2 vertical marks on the magneto plate and the 2 marks ( at 180 degrees ) on the flywheel.---Using those marks is essential to getting the strongest spark.----------The opening of the throttle must be relevant to the rotation of the magplate.

ok so if you look at the line its pass it like 2 inches that make a different and will that throw the timeing off ? and do i need to adjusted it back to the mark on that line so the carb be right ? i set the point to .20 on the flywheel
dont wanna mess anything up

Time to post some pictures of this " line " on the throttle cam.-----------------There are 2 timing considerations on your motor.-One is the points are timed according to the magnets in the flywheel ( hence the name " magneto " for the ignition system )----The other is the timing of the throttle opening , relative to the rotation of the magneto plate.----------The 2 are independent and should not be confused.----------If the single mark / line is 2" past whatever you are looking at there is something drastically wrong.-----------Post some pictures to make yourself clear.

Picture #1 is the line on the cam where the throttle just begins to open when the roller lines up with that single mark on the brass piece.-----The points fire when with the timing mark on the flywheel between those 2 vertical marks on the magplate.------Start it up and use a timing light to find the marks on the flywheel.

would this cause the motor not to run ? cause the roller not on the mark and it throwing off the timeing ? its on top dead center in the pic and see where the mark on the flywheel doesnt line up ? do i need to change the the roller to make it meet the line ?

You are confused by the 2 issues with outboard timing.---------First the timing of the points is done / governed by the magnets on the flywheel.------------The other is the opening of the throttle plate.---------------------The 2 issues are not connected !!!----------First you set the points.-----------------Then you adjust the throttle plate to open when the roller is at the mark on the brass cam.-Then you are done.

ok here what i got now when i put the plugs in no fire and when i dont have the plugs out of the motor and touch the block it has great fire ? what is that i got the plugs set .30 gap and the point are .20 like it said on the flywheel.guess i'll do a compress test see what it is in the morning . any ideas about the fireing issue

Simply put the spark must jump a gap of 1/4" or more.---If it can not pass that test than you have a " no spark " condition and your magneto needs attention.

ok got a question the turn up kit come with white pad what is that use for ? and if i take the plug concert them togther and touch it against the motor right ?you know on the flywheel got top dead center on it in the pic how come it not lineing up ? sorry for those stupid question i'm learning as a go .

ok then it wont be on top dead center if i move that part . it be sucking in ok i'll mess with it more today thanks guys for bearing with me on this project

To me you appear to be mixing up the 2 timing procedures on this motor.------------The coils appear to have been replaced at some time.

Points can be set on all the OMC universal magneto equipped motors since the early 1950's.-------Timing fixtures or the flywheel itself can be used.---All those flywheels have the timing marks.

ok got it to fire up but i have to go thru the carbs not getting gas now i check the fuel line disconnect it from the carb got fuel but can spray starter fuild it run for a sec then die so no fuel . i'm going to go thru the carbs thanks everyone for the help :)
