Hi Folks, Jay here from MarineEngine.com. I have a customer changing out the lower unit on his RDSL-24 to the #382918 gearcase. The 382918 case has specific instructions for installing the water tube into the case on assembly. (see info attached).

The RDSL-24 does not use a water tube in the case. (see photo). How does the RDSL-24 pick up water for the water pump? Does water just flood the inside of the case? (see photo).

Do you think he can use the #382918 case or will he risk burning up the motor? Any suggestions?? Thanks for your help.

Hoo boy, I know the answer, but I don't know the answer. Let me start by saying I've never seen a "kit" as you are showing. But I can tell you some history and maybe you can figure it out.

Through 1967, there were two water tubes, one "up" and one "down or return". Both went into grommets in the cap on the aft side of the pump housing.

The inlet was changed in 1968 and the water entered the pump via a third, short tube coming from the bottom of the gearcase. The up and down tubes remained the same. BUT a different cap was required of the aft of the pump, along with the inlet tube and grommets.

It was changed again in 1970 (maybe 1969??). With that change the "down tube went down to a second grommet in the bottom of the gearcase, and the second grommet hole in the pump cap was blocked off. So, yet still another pump cap.

I don't know why they are telling you to use a cork. It would make more sense to me to use the 1970 parts, consisting of a longer down tube to reach the grommet in the bottom, and the short inlet tube to the correct pump cap.

Maybe this will help. Or not.

Thinking about it a little more, I believe they expect you to use the cork to block off the second hole in the bottom, along with the 1968 short water tube to the pump. You will also need the 1968 cap for the pump. You would then use the original up and down tubes.

Still, if it were mine, I think I'd use the 1970 parts. Unless somebody knows something I don't know.
