"I aquired a boat this summer with a 1964 johnson 60 hp v4 vxl-10. I replaced lower unit seals, put in carb kit and replaced points and condenser, the engine had been sitting awhile. Anyway finally got it out on water and it idled ok but when throttled up it ran like a dog. It gave out on me and I had to fool with points to get back started. Seems like I can get it to idle and low speed ok but it just seems like something is not working right or syncronized right, it's only pushing a 16 foot larson trihull I know it has to go faster than what it is or are these engines that big of dogs? Any suggestions or directions would be greatly appreciated, just seems like somethings not jivving right. Sure wont lose my hat in wind at this speed :)........"

"At the center front lower portion of the carburetor are two 7/16" hex seal bolts. In back of each one of those bolts are a brass fixed high speed jet. Did you manually clean those two jets?

If not, do so with a piece of solid steel wire that will pass thru them.

Pertaining to timing, synchronization etc, hopefully you can locate a service manual as trying to describe those operations would be a lost cause."

"Thanks Joe !
OK, here is what I have done. Replaced points and condenser. Tested coil, cap and rotor. Gaped points by the synchronization method with test light and timing marks at .020. Timed motor with magneto and adjusted the timing with throttle so it fully advances at full throttle.

Engine will idle and throttle up fine when in nuteraul, but when you put it in gear you can only go about 1/3 throttle then it will start chugging and die, starts back up 3 or 4 times and do same thing then it will not start, till I start messing around with timing. Could it be or sound like a fuel problem, i'm taking the carb off of it to night and going to take apart and clean. Any suggestions or input is greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks!
Carl
PS. I did take those bolts out of bottom of carb and fuel ran out of both of them, went ahead and ran wire through them anyway, did not seem to make a differance."
