"Hello All!
New to board and have a question on lower unit seal change. I've got a 1964 Johnson super-seahorse 60hp V4 VXL 10s.

Would like some input from someone familiar with this engine before I tackle the job, i'm getting water mixed in with the gear oil.

According to the manual looks like I have to unhook shift lever by removing a side plate of acces and then undo the 8 bolts holding on the lower unit and should slide off! I do have the extension / spacer on this motor will it come into play? Figure i'll do water pump while i'm at it. Will I need any special tools for the job? Also what seal is usually the culprit of the leakage, i'd just like to know to see if I can see any damage to any of seals.

Any tips, suggestions or tricks would be appreciated, looks like this board has some experiance on it! Thanks for your help in advance!

"Carl.... Disconnecting the shift linkage you mention above, then removing the bolts at the lower unit (leaving the extension in place) will allow the lower unit to drop away.

But before doing that, you might want to check to see if you can pinpoint the leakage first. Drain the gear lube and then replace only one of the screws you removed, then apply 7 to 12 pounds of pressurized air to either the drain or oil level hole. That should allow you to hear and/or see the area of leakage.

It's unlikely you will need special tools on that unit."
