My grandfather purchased a 1964 runabout in 64 in Battle Creek, Michigan. the boat is 17 ft long . I wish to honor my grandfather. He was a career Naval officer. I now have this boat and Im interested in restoring to like new condition. I have the 35 merc outboard motor from 64. I want to repower with new. I live 1 mile from saltwater (FL). The question is what do people on this forum think I should buy to repower ?

I am the kinda guy who would match a vintage boat with a vintage engine,so if I had this outfit,I would restore the Merc, but that's me.
As for repowering,I'm afraid I haventaclue about modern motors. But I would lean towards a Yamaha 30HP as the four stroke is heavier than a two stroke. The Tohatsu 30 HP is the same as the Mercury 30 HP. Tohatsu build them for Mercury.
Plus this side of the Atlantic I cannot purchase a new two stroke/cycle outboard unless I am a commercial operator.

What's wrong with the 35 Merc? Completely shot? That boat with a new 4 stroke just doesn't seem to fit somehow.

Right on!

A nice period accurate 40 to 50 p Merc 4 cylinder would look good and push her along nicely.

And thanks for his service in the Navy.

Jeff
