"Ok, So I need a half moon key

"Ok, So I need a half moon key that holds my flywheel to the crank shaft. I bought some at a local hardware store but I keep sheering them. I think they are too soft of a metal. I need to know the part #. I found a few parts numbers for keys but not sure which one is the correct one."

"Motors shear keys because the taper is screwed up. In reality the key only places the flywheel in its proper position, the taper on the shaft is what holds it in place, if the taper is all roughed up the key is forced to take the load and it will shear. I would imagin with as many failures you have had the flywheel and the crankshaft is all scarred up. Fix that by file and lapping the flywheel to the crank. If your real lucky it will work."

"Ok, I appreciate all the help

"Ok, I appreciate all the help. but that still doesn't answer my question about the part # for the key, Or is it ok to use some key's that i can get at a local hardware store."

"Try this before blowing anoth

"Try this before blowing another key: Get some valve grinding compound and smear it on the crankshaft taper. Leaving the key out, place the flywheel on the crank and "work" it back and forth, grinding away at the connection. (This is not a joke! Racers do it all the time.) About a minute of this and--after cleaning the parts thoroughly!--you can assemble the deal and tighten the beejeeprs out of that nut. That cures lots of key shearing problems.
