1963 Evinrude sportwin 10hp. Stuck in reverse

Last year I took my sportwin out an at the dock it wouldn't come out of reverse. The shifter moves from reverse to neutral to forward with no problems but the prop is always on reverse. Any suggestions? I've never taken apart a lower unit before as I suspect there is a linkage that has come loose or something. Any help would be appreciated.

Racerone probably is correct. But if the bolt has not fallen out, observe whether the rod moves up and down when you move the shifter. If it does not, then it has come loose at the top end. If it does move up and down but doesn't shift, then the problem is down in the lower unit.

Do not take anything apart until you isolate the problem.

BTW, the connector bolt falls out because the last guy did not assemble it correctly. You need to use a flashlight to peer in there to make sue the notch in the shift rod aligns perfectly with the screw hole. If you do not, and the screw rubs on the edge of the notch, it wipes the threads off the screw and it falls out. It is a special 1/4-28 stainless steel screw. Make sure it hasn't also stripped the threads out of the brass connector. All that stuff is available here at Marine Engine

Alright guys, finally got some time to look inside this thing. I took the oval plate off and when I shift the lever the rod does not move and going off from what fdrgater said it has come disconnected at the top end... How difficult is it for me to get to where it is connected at the top? I've done some minor mechanical work on this engine but nothing with the lower unit so it's all new to me.

The last year for that 10 hp model.--------A very good / reliable / easy to work on motor.-------You have to remove the powerhead to see where the problem is.-------Well worth doing and not that hard to do.

So I finally got around to taking the power head off last night. The top end nut was missing on te shift rod, would this have fallen all the way to the lower unit, or is that completely sealed off? Also, I figured I'd replace the gasket between the power head and lower end. When I went to order the gasket, the one the marine engine has listed looks different than the one that came off from it... What do I do now?

Anything that fell down into the housing should go on out the exhaust outlet. It won't hurt anything if it doesn't. It can't get into the lower unit gearcase.

Powerhead gasket is 308385. The picture on the parts drawing page does look kind of funky, but if you click on the thumbnail picture on the list, it will bring up a true photo of it.
