"I have this 1962 model outboard and possibly need lower unit parts, I haven't tore it down yet.

It quit output while crossing the lake so the guy I bought it from told me. (paid 300 for the whole boat and trailer and is an extremely clean unit)

It feels like it shifts but the prop can be turned by hand while in gear with jerky slippage.

Am I batting zero for drive parts or can they still be bought ... and where?

I have searched cyberspace with no results

Thanks"

Does the prop shaft turn with

Does the prop shaft turn with the prop (in gear) if not then its just a drive pin or spun prop.

If the shaft turns too then the fault is internal

Same happpen in forward and reverse?

As Vic says I would think it i

As Vic says I would think it is a shear pin or bush in the prop and im sure Joe would have parts.

Those gear box's are bullet proof they never gave much problems

"Prop and pin are OK, I started dropping the lower unit (which I'm in the dark on) and found it won't shift in either reverse or drive, it only goes to neutral and which ever the other one.

I have the lower unit pulled out about 2 inches but won't come any further, what else has to come off the shift unit and how?

I'm new here as you can see, so who's Joe and how do I contact him if I need to.

Thanks for helping"

"UPDATE

For sure the lower unit took a crap

I took the bottom off of it and found the shift fork, the aluminum piece that moves the shift dogs, the pinion, one drive gear and a slight crack in the housing cover that has the skag on it all fubbed

Basically I need everything inside plus the bottom lid (I could probably weld that it's been done before but has a couple of pin holes)

I'm guessing the cost will stop me even if those are available

Any guesses on availability and cost ??"

I would shop for a used one at

I would shop for a used one at "twincities outboards" or some closer wrecking yard. They put that lower on many 40's over the years. Some one has a pile of them. I used to.

"Thanks William

I figured those gears where made by contract from some co. I can't imagine others not using them.

Now, If I only new who used them and when

Back then, was OMC, Johnson and evinrude all one co. ??"

"I don't think that they w

"I don't think that they were exactly the same back then, but the changes were just to stop exact transfer of parts, so Johnson would have fine splined drive shafts and Evinrude would use 4 spline shafts, some of the drive shafts were to long to interchange, but as far as I know, the main components to the lower were a straight replacement."

Thanks to all that helped me

Thanks to all that helped me

I bought an old unit from Ebay and hope it's the right one. I didn't have time to contact the seller to ask questions but the picture looks right

Now only time will tell ...

"If the drive shaft is wrong,

"If the drive shaft is wrong, you can easily (but carefully) swap them And if both pinion and crank splines are the same, I've cured seal grooves by switching ends and re drill the pin drive for the wp. Make sure the water pump is correct as they had a single water tube version and a double. That also changed the wear plate and some short plumbing down there."

"That's the things that bother me .. in the picture on Ebay, I can see 3 things sticking out the top

The drive shaft, shift rod but has what looks to be a longer connector than mine and looks to be a single copper looking pipe.

Mine has a 1 inch long shift coupler and dual water pipes that bolt right onto the lower unit

Is the impeller in the lower unit or up near the power head? I have taken that off yet

I'm hoping if the new one is a single pipe that I can use the shift and gears from it and rebuild my original"

"Here is the update

I got the unit which was supposed to be an early 60s and it won't fit.

It has a one pipe water supply and mine has two

Also it came with a 5" extension and that will not marry up to my upper, so the lower unit won't either.

I took the gears out which looked like new and was going to put them in my housing and all fit except the pinion gear.

Mine is about 3" long and has 2 bearings, a main roller and a needle above that. The new gear is only about half that length and don't use the needle bearing.

I bought a 40 buck factory service manual and it has no parts numbers so I can't really compare numbers to buy

Would anyone have and look up my pinion part number please.

This is for a 1962 Evinrude Lark 40 hp manual shift Model 35531

Thanks"

Have you tried the Local "

Have you tried the Local "Craigs List" These motors are plentiful and cheap. A free ad in the boating section should bring several offers of entire motors for sale.

This is a high

"Thanks Bob

This is a high 100,s compression engine and runs great (I knew the original owner) and I'm just 1 pinion gear away from the water.

I see many pinion gears on ebay cheap if I just knew the parts number of mine.

I would buy a parts book, but it would probably exclude 1962 like the manual I just bought.

40 bux for it and I think 1962 is in it twice and the word Lark once ... what a piece"

"Keith, the complete parts cat

"Keith, the complete parts catalog is available on this site and should include all parts as well as original part numbers...Not sure what parts are still available from OMC...If you can find a post by Joe Reeves, you will also find a link to his Ebay website and a listing of what obsolete parts he might have in stock..I have a 1962 40 evinrude on back of a 13 foot whaler...Great engine...Good luck.

Probably be much cheaper to pi

Probably be much cheaper to pick up a used lower unit. Got to be a few thousand of them laying around.
