I just bought this motor and it starts and runs great but when I shift with the electric shift button from neutral to forward it Does nothing although reverse works fine. I was wondering what might cause this. I tried fallowing the wires from the front electric control buttons one blue and one green back to the motor and down the shaft to the lower leg but cant figure out how to take off the lower leg to get to the shifting gears forward and reverse. I took off the propeller and the first set of bearings and the c clip but cant get the prop shaft out is there a trick? please help thanks

Also if the nose cone is cracked on the lower leg. What will fix this for e.g. JB weld or something that wont be affected by the gear oil, and that would make a good bond.
to the cast aluminum? it is actually the tip busted off but the previous owner jb welded it and it leaked a little gear oil because he didn't clean it good enough. then when I drained the oil it had some water that leaked in that pin hole. would this make it not shift into forward? thanks for any help. Aloha

On the starboard side of the powerhead towards the rear, you'll find the shift wires leading to the lower unit. These are connected to the engine's wiring harness by what is called "knife connectors". Disconnect the two wires. Before going any further with disasembly, check for proper shifting first by simply applying 12 volts to one wire then the other. If shifting is normal, the prop should grab in one direction and slip in the other in both forward and reverse.

If forward is indeed faulty, Remove the long rear exhaust housing cover. Remove the oblong plate on the starboard side of the long exhaust housing cover, and also the plate that you'll see inside.

Tie a string or a flexible wire to the two lower unit wires so that you'll be able to snake them back up after repairs are made.

Remove the lower unit retaining bolts and drop the lower unit.

A excellent epoxy repair material especially made for marine work would be "Marine-Tex". It comes in two colors. Use the "Gray" Marine-Tex, NOT the white.

thanks for the help I will try the 12v test.

I have all those covers off and have it dropped down but still cant access where the ends of the wires go.
I need to get the prop shaft out
because the wires end just above it.
Also if there is water in the lower leg oil will that cause it not to shift?
and once it is drained out and flushed then refilled with new gear oil will that be ok ? thanks again Aloha

Temporarily bolt the lower unit back up with a couple bolts.

Are you saying that you did remove the side plates and the large rear cover as mentioned? If so, it should be easy to get at the wire connections.

I assume you did not attempt to apply 12 volts directly to the shift wires, one at a time?

I did try the 12v trick it worked for a second on one wire but then I tried the other and it did not work then back to the first wire stopped working .
still trying to get the whole lower leg off . I have it dropped down about an inch but it wont slide out the rest of the way. is there a clip ring or something to take of the top of the drive shaft to get it to pull out? or do i just need to pull hard?
any help would be great

Did you remove the inner plate on the side that the wires feed thru?. If so, I would assume that the driveshaft splines are stuck in the crankshaft splines. Hopefully you can yank or pry the lower unit off.

I got it all out my reverse coil still works but the wires were all chewed up.
the gears are all good but I cant get the pinion and the forward gear out. they are both somehow stuck in the gear casing and i took out the snap ring from the end of the forward gear thinking it would the somehow slid out but no luck. is there a special puller to get the forward gear and the forward coil?

Special tools are normally required, however a hand held propane torch applying heat to the nose cone usually allows the aluminum to expand enough for the forward coil to drop out. If you removed the propshaft, the pinion and forward gear should easily come out.
