1963 evinrude 10hp model 10302D crankshaft seal

Good morning
the top seal was leaking pretty bad (oil everywhere). I've purchased new tune up kit and coils plus new carbon seal and oil ring
I've done several days research but there seems to be some question which way the carbon seal is installed notches up or down. I've
also talked to 2 local outboard mechanics and have received 2 different answers. Do the notches face towards the bearing allowing oil to drain back to bearing or up to allow removal if need be. Does this seal actually spin with the crank? The old seal was so broken up that I couldn't tell or just didn't notice the notches. Thank you in advance.
 
??----Hard to believe.-----Notches are up.-----Does one side of the seal have a raised surface ?-----That side goes to the precision sealing face on the bearing.-----I believe the seal does spin and is driven by the spring.----Elegantly simple and good design.
 
it was oil fouling my points and everything was covered in oil. There was pieces of the carbon seal missing thats why i didn't see notches. I
do believe one side is smooth and the other is raised. So notches up it is.
 
That's what I thought. Damn it if I broke the new carbon trying to install it. Should there be a little lubricant
on the inside surface of the o-ring ( part that contacts the crank)?
 
Your location ?-----This is a mechanical seal ----The carbon spins on the precision surface on the bearing.------O-ring seals along the shaft.----Spring put the proper " push " on the carbon to make the seal and to compensate for any wear.----Yes the o-ring should be lubricated.----Too bad you can't walk over for a repair clinic and parts.
