I know it,s old but runs like a clock almost. I have had this engine for some years. I ran it on a small two man
bass boat for a for years. A friend gave a 14 ft jon boat & I plan to use this motor. Well I pulled it out & found
the arm that goes to choke lever is missing. No big deal I can make another. I started it up & runs good except the tiller
throttle is stuck in shift mode. When I try move it in to slow & fast it seems stuck. I,m a fared to force it. The gears
shift fine. Neutral, forword, & reverse. Any Ideas ?????

There's a dent piece (near bottom left of carb, held by a # 10 bolt) that limits the tiller motion. It may be out of position and binding. I recommend tossing this piece out in any case to improve cold starting--you can give it more throttle.

PS: Those are great little motors!

It could be several things I would start at the stator plate. drape a rag under the carb to catch small parts and pull the link from the throttle lever to the stator plate and see if the stator moves free and smooth throughout the range. I believe there is just a cotter pin and washer that holds the link to the throttle control.

OK fellow here is where I,m on this old Merc. I pulled that cotter pin & pin that works the stator plate & found the
stator plate to be very stiff. I sprayed under & around it & that freed it up a bunch. But I found the cam that bolted to
the bottom of the stator plate bottom is barely opening the throttle. I took that lever lose again with the cotter pin &
took that lever off. You can advance the stator plate with it off to the point with your hand to where it opens the throttle
wide open. But not with lever connected. It is so hot & humid here I stopped till this evening. It also seems something
is keeping those gears from the throttle from turning far enough.

Boy how many times was I told when your tired hot & frustrated go sit down & relax. That's what I did & wrote the
reply above. Well remembering what you all said I went back out. I got my little bright flash light out to see why this
thing would not open he throttle & there was that throttle stop I was told about. I took the whole thing out. It opens
all the way. I most likely have never run at full throttle with this motor before. I thank each of you.I plan to make that
choke lever that should be no problem.

Your gonna eventually need to lube it up properly do it the next time you replace the points. There are two spring loaded plates that holds the stator down you will need to remove those plates and the stator just lifts straight up. Clean everything good with acetone and then use a high quality marine lithium grease to put it back together. You dont want to wear out the gears for the throttle shafts just keep that old gem running long as possible.

Thanks Kim that is great advice. I plan to go over this motor this winter. I,m going to make a good cat fish boat
out of it. The funny thing is I have a very nice Gambler bass boat with a 225 efi Merc. But I refuse to let slimy
cat fish on my carpet. (wink) I wish I could find manual for this ole motor. Thank the lord for you guys!

Hey Guys! just joined this thing today, and I'm trying to get some help for a 1971 merc. 9.8 110. I just rebuilt the lower unit(seal and o ring),but it is still leaking very slightly.Doesn't leak when it's sitting on the stand, but when I run it in a barrel,it is leaving a film of oil in the barrel. Also when I take it out of the barrel it will leak very little and eventually stop. Is there a torque spec on how tight to tighten that nut that holds the bearing carrier in?? HELP!

Your new here it is not polite to hyjack someone elses thread. Go to forum home and click on mercury outboard forum and click start new thread. You will get better responses and avoids confusion.

Up date to my friends here. I been messing with this ole Merc off & on since I last talked to you. Been so hot & humid here a ole fellow as me
just can't take it any more. But after greasing the handle gears & so on I put it in the water barrel for a test. MY LORD second pull, boom it ran
as a well oiled clock. I,m soooooooo happy & I can not thank you guys enough. Tomorrow I,m putting the new transom on & the water I go. I
will keep you posted

Thank you, Thank you Fly
