Hello I have a 1962 Johnson Electric Sea Horse Super Quiet Motor runs fine in idle,or very low speed . But as soon as you put the gas to it .It does not get up too speed and misses. Very slow . Can someone please help . do you think its points,or timing . Please e-mail [email protected]

What is the history of this motor ? ---Used a lot or in storage for years and years ??-------------It is 50 years old -----------You start with a compression test.---------Then check to see that spark will jump a 1/4" gap or more.-------------Post your results of these 2 checks.

On those older motors that people traditionally used cheap oil in the mix, the upper main bearing would wear.
When acceleration reached the point where the flywheel was a little loose (Oscillating) the points would Make/Break uncontrollably.

See it will rev up with no load. If it does, then wiggle the flywheel from side to side, when your looking down through the flywheel at the points.
I hope that's not your problem though.

Another thing which is a lot easier is the Fuel pump might not be keeping up with the Engine. Try Squeezing the ball when it's burbeling to see if that straightens it out.

A 1962 40hp Johnson is a pretty bullet proof motor, Unless completely abused. If you get the spark and fuel correct, She'll run. Try to get an OEM repair manual off of ebay P.S. 1962 is the the first year that can be run on 50:1 fuel ratio.

The upper main bearing is well engineered , no know history of problems.---------Do some " no cost trouble shooting " first.
