I have 1961 merc 60 6 hp I completely rebuilt it rings, gaskets, seals , fuel pump everything. Idling or at half throttle runs great. Full throttle will bog and die. Take housing off and it will run with open throttle. Do I dare drop main jet size? It has standard.45 in it now

Okay. If that's the case, it should have no effect on jetting. I suspect an ignition coil is failing and it's dropping a cylinder. Best way to find out is to run the HELL out of it as it's screwing up, then shut it RIGHT down--no idling--and plug plugs. The wet, black and sooty one needs work: Either the points need cleaning, the capacitor is shot, or the coil has had it.

Can't understand why motor will run wide open with cowling off, but only 1/2 to 2/3 open with cowling on. If coil or points and condenser( both are new) motor should not be able to run full throttle with cowling off. I will try high speed plug check. Thanks any more ideas will be appreciated
