" I just purchased two new coils for the old Johnson from Sierra and I'm confused about the wirring. The new coils have a black and green wire. Referencing the old coils, it looks like the green wire should be connected to the points and the black to ground. The old coils wires were both black. Does anyone know which wire is ground and which is to be connected to the points? The new coil part number is 18-5181. "

"Pete.... The shorter of the two wires would be the ground and would be the top wire. Be sure to line up the metal vertical edge of the coils with the top edge of the bevel upon which they sit. That bevel is to allow the proper distance between the coil yoke and the flywheel magnets.

I was succesful in installing the new coils and points. I also adjusted the carburetoer per your recomendations and now the motor runs like a champ!
