1961 johnson 40hp water outlet

I just purchased a1961 40hp johnson sea horse and brought it home and hooked up ear muffs to it and when running its not shooting out water out the the hole. Is this correct I've never owned anything this old.

Standard muffs do not work on this motor.-------The main water intake is the screen behind the prop.--------Best to run it in a tank with the water about 6" above the water pump !

Tempo at one time made a flusher for this motor but it's now NLA. As said above the best way to run it now is a big barrel or the lake.
