1960s Mercury Control

I bought a boat and brought it to a guy for a tune up. He says that the control will need to be replaced before he can adjust the timing on the motor. He said these controls can not be repaired and that he's waiting for another control to come through that he can use on it. He wasn't very clear on what was wrong, but I know there was a bearing inside that had dislodged. Are these controls fixable, or is there a universal control that can be made to work with the motor? I'm likely going to go pick up the boat and try to get it running myself, but was just curious if anybody had any ideas on what my options are. I couldn't get the pictures to post here properly even after resizing them, so I have posted the pictures here. https://imgur.com/a/BlrB1

Yeah, which is fine. I have no problem with doing it myself, but I'm having a hard time finding any information on this control. All I can really see is that it looks like it's early 60's. Is it better just to buy a newer on and make it work?
