Hi guys, first time boat owner. I recently picked up this 9.8 and with the helpful info and parts on this site/forum, got her running.
BUT, I don't quite understand how her choke works.
The choke is binary, like a switch, either full open or full closed. When I look with the cover off it's definitely spring loaded to snap to these two states. When I turn the switch clockwise, a plate swings over and blocks pretty much the entire carb opening. If I turn the switch counter clockwise, the plate swings back out exposing the carb intake.
Now, the engine only starts with the switch counter clockwise, with the carb fully exposed. It cold starts this way too. But will not start at all with the choke fully clockwise.
What I do is choke the carb, pull a few times, nothing happens, then I release the choke, pull, and she fires up.
Is this normal? I thought the engine should start woth the choke engaged. I've never seen a choke that I cant adjust how much it closes. Should I fight the spring loaded nature of the switch? Thanks-
