I've cleaned carb and replaced high speed needle, and have been able to get this old girl to run for about thirty seconds at a time. As per advice from here, I've opened low speed jet 1.5 turns to 2 turns, and high speed from 3/4 to 1 turn. Invariably it seems to rev up to higher speed for a few seconds just before it dies, no matter where the speed lever is placed. Still has the old cork float in it, but it seems to be holding up reasonably well. Have disassembled the carb several times and gaskets seem OK, and I'm not finding significant residue in the bowl. I'd love to make it work...seems a lot smoother than the one-lung 3.5 Nissan 2-stroke that I hope to replace.

Look at / clean / replace the filter in the tank.----Not enuff fuel flow -----------------------Or if running with the fuel pump ( option ) you may need to look at the pump and hoses.

Thanks...I'd sort of wondered whether the breather on the gas cap was clogged, but recently cleaned it out...checked the filter once a while back, and actually sort of brushed/cleaned it w/solvent, but it may have gotten cruddy again.

Remove and backwash the filter with carb cleaner...It is a brass sintered metallic design and clogs easily if old gas has been left in the tank...you can also eliminate the filter by hacksawing it off and using a see through inline filter in the copper line from the tank to the carb. Gas oil ratio should be 24 to 1 with TCW oil.
