"Even though it is not suppose

"Even though it is not supposed to make any difference when adjusting the points, I put the throttle at WOT with the points wiper on the cam's word ("TOP"). I split the difference and put the wiper on the letter "O". If I don't set them at WOT it will not acclerate.

I did get my motor to start and run ok at first. It ran fine at WOT for awhile then starting surging. Finally slowed way down and wouldn't go very fast at all (at a crawl). The problem cleared up for awhile then came back. Float sticking or throttle buttlerfly loose???
Here is what I have now:
1. Starts and runs but only at very slow speed (boat speed).
2. Magneto parts all look ok
3. Pumping the fuel bulb didn't make any difference.
4. Has a new fuel pump on it.
The motor ran fine before now this!!
Thank you,
Bill"

Do your coils have cracks i le

Do your coils have cracks i learned that you should wipe points with paper last step so theres no oil or ? had to do this few times never fail if i dont i have to pull flywheel and do it good luck

Why do you not want to learn t

Why do you not want to learn to set the points using the timing marks??

"There is no timing marks on t

"There is no timing marks on the flywheel. Strange but true. The coils are new and I did clean the points (they are new to).
Thank you,
Bill"

"to set the points,using timin

"to set the points, using timing marks on ign plate,...u would need a timing fixture...setting them at .020,will get the job done,..clean well w/alcohol."

The timing fixture is nothing

The timing fixture is nothing but a " dummy " flywheel to save shop time. The flywheel can be used to put the crankshaft in position and then lifting it off.You must lock the magplate in either full throttle or full slow it does not matter. THE POINTS ARE TIMED TO TO MAGNETS ON THE FLYWHEEL.

"I have a FD-13, had to rebuil

"I have a FD-13, had to rebuild the ignition system. As I remember, I just used the high point on the cam to set the points, disregarding any marks on the cam, or timing marks on the fly wheel. I dont have the factory manual for this paticular motor, so I had to go with the Seloc generic manual, and this is how it was explained. Is this wrong? The spark is good and strong. Any input welcome."

"the timing fixture method,is

"the timing fixture method,is just a more accurate way of setting timing on those eng's...when u take into account,...stator plate bushing wear, cam wear,etc...setting points at 20 is just fine...in fact, regardless of how well a person sets points,or method used,if the bushing area on stator plate is badly worn, and 90% are,...u cant keep an 'accurate' setting any way.so trying to set by the 'new eng' timing marks,is a waste of time,..unless,..everything is in excellent shape..."

"I'm going to double check

"I'm going to double check my points settings then and see if I am running on one cylinder. If all checks out I'll look elsewhere for the problem.

I'm beginning to think it may be the fuel pump. Though it is new it may be damaged as I forgot to open the vent on the plastic gas tank once and it was sucked in some before I noticed it.

Thank you,
Bill"

I have a spark tester and plan

I have a spark tester and plan on using it to verify the spark on both cylinders. Now with the cam positioned so that the letter "O" in the word "TOP" is in line with the points wiper the points at set to .020" at WOT. This looks like to highest point on the cam to me.

At the off throttle position both sets of points are closed with one of the points wipers at the high point on the cam.

"thats where is set them... on

"thats where is set them... on the 'o'...on some a lil newer, they have the word 'set' stamped.remember,..they need to be real clean...i use alcohol."
