1960 Evinrude 75 HP engine

Hello!

So a quick update on my engine, still not running. HOWEVER, I have made significant progress on finding the problem. I mentioned before that there was no electricity going to the coil, I fixed that. It turns out that when I installed the new coil, I made the mistake of putting the wire on wrong, basically grounding the electricity. After fixing that, I got electricity to the coil. The coil on my engine leads to only a few parts on the motor that leads to the sparkplugs, the rotor and the distributor cap. The distributor cap cracked when I put it back on and there is corrosion on the points that the rotor touches. The rotor looks fine.

I think I am getting close, I just have two questions, from what I say does it sound like the distributor cap is failing or the rotor? Should I replace both the rotor and the cap or just the cap? Either way, the cap needs so be replaced because it cracked in half.

Thanks!

Jared

Replace them both, but the rotors used to give the biggest problems. If you have the proper equipment you can bench test them but I doubt if you do.

You probably have already been told this, but the rotors arc through to the shaft. Just a very tiny pin hole between the metal bar on top to the shaft. As boobie suggested, you can test it using a coil tester. And it would seem obvious you don't have a coil tester.

Hello!

I was screwing it in, I screwed way too much and too hard, and now there is a BIG crack. It is not exactly in half, but It is still cracked and bad enough that it needs to be replaced. Other than that, I am getting electricity to the coil now. At least I solved that problem! Anyway, does anyone know where I can get a new distributor cap and rotor for this particular engine? A 1960 75hp Evinrude?

I think I am getting close to fixing it. Who knows?

Anyway, thanks!

Jared
