How do you get the lower unit disconnected from the shift control rod? With a short shaft there is no "window" to disconnect the rod. I cannot get to the water pump.

manual says to separate gearcase from exhaust-rotate flywheel clockwise to align upper locking pin with corresponding slots in upper exhaust housing-trail & error-separate gearcase from exhaust housing & remove connector screw-also look at exploded view of lower unit parts on this web site & it will give a better idea of what your looking at

The powerhead must come off to service the water pump. 7 bolts underneath the pan will remove the powerhead. You will need to disconnect the fuel line and a piece that connects the throttle lever. You will see what I mean. Underneath the powerhead are two hex nuts that you remove to disconnect the shift rod. She just drops down after that. Be sure to get a new powerhead to exhaust gasket (BRP#313065 or Sierra 18-2901) and a new crankcase seal (BRP#303355 or Sierra 18-2892). They are cheap and will ensure the motor runs well after this service.
