1960 40 hp water output question

I have a 1968 Johnson evinrude 40hp. My question is: How much water should be coming out while its running and from where? Please help. I don't want to burn up my first motor.

See that large hole in the back of the long exhaust housing (housing between the powerhead and the lower unit), a short distance below the powerhead? Water should be shooting out there like it was coming out of a garden hose with quite a force.

on that eng,..u should see a volume,of wtr out the back,...big hole
