Getting this motor ready to hang on my boat. Testing in barrel. Magneto rebuilt. Works good. New fuel lines, filter, pumps gas good. Fuel fresh and clean. Carb is tight, no leaks, primer gets hard. It all checks out.

Start motor. Will run its best with choke ON. Flip choke off and revs drop off and motor stalls. Work throttle at carb by hand motor will rev, some stuttering. Place throttle at full start position (stop plate limits mag advance and throttle cam when in neutral) and motor just idles, it should be revving like mad at that point. Flip choke on and motor takes off. Link and sync is right.

manual/electric choke, not auto choke. Carb not flooding. Plugs look right.

Summary: choke = happy. no choke = sluggish

please point me in the right direction.
Thanks

Sounds right to me. I have a carb kit coming. Will try your suggestions.

On a more hysterical note; could this be a failing crank seal?

I have never heard this motor run. Anything is possible.

Thank you
