1958 jw-14 spring ?

Hello. I have a 58' 3 hp which I'm trying to replace a gear case seal. Right now the seal is winning, I have been careful not to damage anything so far, except the seal that's in there. I ordered a different puller and am confident I will get it out. The seal is the one that sits below the impeller plate. My question is I found ( pulled out ) a spring ? It's about 2" long and tightly wound with no " hooks" on either end to grab onto anything. It's maybe an 1/8" in diameter. Does anybody have any clue where this came from ? I have a parts catalog. The spring must have been in the gear case unit all along, because it didn't notice it when I separated the gear case from the lower unit. Thanks in advance.

I'm thinking it is the "garter" spring that goes around the seal lip. Part of the seal, it would normally be a continuous circle (that's why they call it a garter). However It probably would be a tad smaller than what you describe.

Thank you. I am also convinced its part of the old seal ! That's exactly were I was " digging " around when I found it. Just wasn't sure and didn't see anything in my parts diagram. I have new seals, but they don't appear to have any spring in them. Is this something I need to worry about ? The size of that spring is just big enough to fit inside the old seal too. Thanks again.

Hm...., I would be concerned about seals with no spring. Not to say they won't work, but they would be far greater quality if they have one. You got them here at marineengine, right?

Well of course I can't see them from here, but I'd be very surprised if they don't have the spring. In fact, I installed some 327031 a couple of weeks ago and didn't notice anything strange about them. Maybe I didn't look closely enough???
