1958 fat fifty tilt assy

Hello all,
Awesome forum as usual! Got a new project now and i am stumped! I have a 58 fat fifty motor, and cannot get the motor to stay propped up ( tilted back ) for putting into the water. Ive referenced the diagram on here but cant seem to figure out what parts i still need to complete this assembly. I will post the pics i took to show what items are there now.
Any help or espectially pictures of how its supposed to look would be appreciated! I beleive i am missing some pins and springs, but not entirely sure!
I have the front lever that moves side to sideand releases the motor to tilt it up, but no means of keeeping it tilted. I have a free hinging " v" or "c" looking arm that looks like it should cradle or catch something to hold it up. Any help or pics would be great!
I have no idea on how to get these pics uploaded!

First a warning. The big bear trap spring that helps tilt the motor is dangerous if not treated with respect. If you remove the motor from the boat in the locked down position, then release the tilt, it will violently untilt. It can bust a bone if you are in the way. OK, the C-shaped thing you mentioned was a design change. It prevents the bear trap from springing when off the boat. It was not on early motors.

On to your question. Right above the starboard transom clampscrew is the tilt lock (#84) to hold it up. It usually is broken from improper use. It is NOT meant to hold it up for trailering. Doing that breaks it. On the port transom bracket is a sideways clampscrew (#21). Screwing that in is supposed to hold it up for trailering. Screwy design. Get a transom saver if you need to trailer it in tilted position.

I never trusted it either on my 40hp engines I always just use a thick rope to hold it in the travel position just strap it up tight and you should be fine. Better safe than sorry.
 
Thanks guys! Huge help in figuring this out! Especially not hurting myself in the process! I just had several "a-ha" moments reading all your responses! I thought I would be able to tilt and lock it up while in the boat to get it ready to trailer, but seems like this is to be done outside the boat, from the back!
Again, much thanks! I dont think I currently have the item #84 tilt lock pin, nor the sideways clamp screw #21 on it- must've broken offby previous owner!
Does anyone know if I obtain these parts, I would be able to tilt it up whie standing in the boat?
 
It should be easy to tilt from inside the boat. That's what the bear trap spring is for. If the lock pins are missing, the stern bracket most likely is broken. Most of them are. Take a good look to see just what you have to work with.
 
I remember back in late 60's we used to stick a length of 2x4 under a 65 horse merc. to prop engine up,not sure if old school is still being used lately
 
Hey guys thanks for everything- i am missing the side bolt and am planning on hunting one down somewhere. I do have another question tho,- what gear lube do i use to replenish the lower unit? Im having a hard time finding what to ise for it. I do have a WestMarine store close by, so hopefully they will have what i need there.
