I just got a 12 ft alum boat last night and can't wait to get it in the water, but first I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing, 15024 means it's a 1958 ? yes,, and it should take a 24:1 mix, pre 1960, but the more I read it sounds like I may want to go with a 50:1 with todays oils , this Looks like what I have read so far, would like to hear back from someone.. I want to do this right,, Thanks

Model 15024 is indeed a 1958 18hp Evinrude.

That model has needle, roller, and ball bearings on all of its powerhead moving parts, top main bearing, center main bearing, bottom main bearing, connecting rod to crankshaft bearing, and wrist pin bearing. As such, you can safely use the latest 50/1 mixture.... 1 pint of 50/1 TCW-III oil to 6 gallons of gasoline. A gasoline octane rating of 87 will be fine.

You can use either Champion J4C or J6C spark plugs gapped at .030 . The J6C may provide somewhat improved performance.

Interesting...Bearing wise, the 50 to 1 ratio with tcw should work fine...I just wonder if the piston and ring clearances are different than later motors that run on 50 to 1...my concern is blow by and damage which might result if clearances are greater than on later motors...Joe...What size omc vintage motors use bushings instead of bearings???

Bobbyc...... If memory serves me correctly (don't have time to check books right now), the bushing components come into the picture in the horsepower range beneath the older 18hp models.
