I have a 1958 evinrude 450 50hp - I lost spark - took mag/coil assembly off and took to my friends 82 year old dad ,he is a master at mags and coils , he cleaned and set the points - works great , lots of spark . My ? now is setting all the timing marks , I set them before takeing apart , so should be close , Im wondering about fine tuneing , someone said something about setting timing marks with throttle in full throttle position? I dont have a service manual yet so any help would be greatly appreciated !

Unless you have access to the timing tool, just set the points at .020 by looking at the cam follower for the position. A timing tool is a device that slips over the crankshaft on the flywheel key and allows for tuning in the points using a volt/ohm meter to indicate when the points actually open. Not really needed unless you are into racing. Great thing about the 50's OMC motors is that they were built for user service. Also, close was able to be usable. In a pinch you can set the points using the cover from a match book and the motor will run well. That one I know for a fact as I have done it.

Thanks for the reply , what I am wondering about is setting of the timing marks - what i mean is i have the flywheel mark set to the case mark and the mag/coil case mark set to the indent on the bracket , but to set the mag /coil pulley mark to the mag/coil case mark it changes depending on throttle positioning ??? That is my question , hope you can help. Kelly
