1958 Evinrude 18hp lower unit

I picked up a resealed lower unit for a 1958 18hp Evinrude to replace the one I have. Mine has the short shaft and this one is a longshaft. I really dont want to take it apart if if I dont have to. I have no use for the longer shift arm so I was thinking I could just cut 5 inches off that one and cut the groove in it so that it would connect right. Sound like it would work or would I be better off just taking it apart and switching them out?

File a notch in the rod exactly 5" lower.----Then cut off 5" of rod.
