"From what I can tell this is a 1958 35 HP Model # RDE 19C means?? Electric start? Actually the engine looks fine and would believe that it was run not too long ago. Wondering if I should try and fire this thing up or give it a once over and replace/repair items as needed. I.E. Plugs, wires, carb dunking, etc? If I do decide to fire her up, anything I need to be aware of? fuel mixture? I got everything the old guy had including a fuel tank and line, but no wiring harness? that p[lugs into the side of the engine. Looks to be rectangular with 8 or 9 pins? Is this just for the battery connections, for lights and the like or do I need that in order to run it? It does have the pull rope so I was just going to see if it would fire up in a barell or something. Any advice for a newbie would be much appreciated."

"RDE-19C means that the you have a 1958 35hp Johnson outboard. Mixture is 50/1 as the powerhead incorporates all bearings on its moving parts. Use either Champion J4C or J6C plugs, gapped at .030. LOwer unit uses what is called HiVis gearlube, available at Wal*Mart, K-Mart, many other stores.

The coils under the flywheel may be cracked but remove the plugs and test for spark first. Usually the carburetor is clogged due to sitting. Try running it first, then we'll go from there.
