"I am new to boating and bough

"I am new to boating and bought a 1958 Johnson 35 HP sea horse RDE-19C The motor runs great and was was serviced last year. I can not get the boat to move very fast when in the water. The motor will rev up and the prop turns but will not get the boat to plain out, it will move; but nothing faster than 5 MPH! if that.

I have rebuilt the lower gear case because of a crack in the lower housing. I replaced both bearing and resealed the case and prop seal. I need to pressure test the lower unit yet.

Also, what about the water pump? could it be bad? Since I'm new to this, I don't yet under stand how the motor power the prop? Does the prop get it's power from the water pump?

Thanks,
Kent

"Check to see if you have shea

"Check to see if you have sheared the pin going through the prop, sounds like you are spinning it..."

"The engine delivers power to

"The engine delivers power to the prop via the drive shaft and the pinion gears in the lower unit. The water pump is attached to the drive shaft by a key or pin and does not effect the power output of the engine. Nor does it have any role in the transfer of power from the engine to the prop. The pin you see, is it on the inside or outside of the prop? From your picture there should be a cotter pin to hold the prop cone on and then inside/under the prop there should be a straight metal pin about 1/8 - 1/4 inch diameter to keep the prop from spinning. This is a shear pin to prevent damage to the drive shaft in the event the prop hits an immovable object. It is possible to for the pin to break to the extent that the prop will still turn the engine or vice-versa at low speed but will not allow the engine to turn the prop up to full speed when met with the resistance of water."

"So the water pump is only use

"So the water pump is only used for cooling then?

The only pin (under the cone) is a round pin, but I see a 1/8 cut out in both prop shaft and prop for the shear pin! Thanks. I have a replacement prop, but that one only has the round pin hole, it must be a non shear prop? not good.

Thanks for your help so far, I love the boat so far and only got to use it a short time before I broke it. You live and learn."

Your prop hub is spinning. Loo

Your prop hub is spinning. Look at the shiny surface made by the drive-pin on the big pic. You either need to change the hub or the complete prop.

"Thanks! I put the other pro

"Thanks! I put the other prop on for now. That makes sense now, the hub on the prop was spinning. Wonder if it better to get a new prop or can the hub be replaced?

Thanks every one!"
