A friend is working on his family's 7 1/2 and It's hard to pull over. He has squirted some lube into it but it hasn't really helped. I remember hearing somewhere something about the shock absorber causing this if it is defective. Could someone enlighten me about this. please?

Correct.----There is a shock absorber just below the water pump.---Powerhead must be removed to replace the water pump impeller and to inspect the shock absorber.----Any oil in the lower unit?

Yes, there is lube in the lower unit. As it turns out, the individual pulled it over with lube in the cylinders several times. It did finally loosen up, and surprisingly, started and ran quite well. It's running a little warm as he wasn't able to hold his hand under the water stream for five seconds. And even though it started and ran, I can't help but feel that the coils wouldn't need to be looked at. I didn't know about that shock being inside the lower unit. I thought the only shock absorber was the rubber one on the exterior, If I'm thinking of the right motor.

It is actually a " slip clutch " and it is known to jam up if the spring inside it breaks.------A nearly 70 year old engine requires a complete inspection in my opinion.
