1956 Fleetwin 7.5 shifter problems......

Hi everyone, New guy here.

To shift my motor into neutral, I have to move the shift lever about a quarter of the way between neutral and reverse. It goes into forward and reverse great, but when I hit the neutral detent, it is partially in forward. It doesn't look like there is any adjustment to solve this problem.I have searched this site and many others and can't find anyone that has had this problem. I ordered a manual for this motor, but it is in PA and on the way. I would like to devote some time this weekend to getting this squared away (raining all weekend here) so I can hit the lake next weekend. Does anyone have an idea of what's up??

Thank you

Sounds like your shift linkage is over compensated towards forward gear. To adjust find the two bolts that hold the shift handle on the shift shaft at side of motor. One of the bolts passes through an elongated slot/hole which allows adjustment. Shift gears and test spin prop by hand. Listen to gear case, a smooth, quiet hand spin is what you want. Over compensated will cause wear on the shift cradle.

Thanks, but my shift handle doesn't have mounting bolts. It mounts in a thru hole and has a shaped collar that bolts on the shaft on the inside of the shifter housing that hold it in place.

Right, got it. No adjustment. I am no expert. It seems that the shift rod is pulling too much, over compensating for forward, not centering dog when in neutral. To make it pull less you would have to lengthen the shift rod. How about a couple of small washers (shims) at the top of the shift rod under the shift spindle?
