"This outboard motor, will run for a few seconds when choked and pressure button on fuel tank is repeatedly pressed. I don't understand this type of fuel system and also don't know if there are filters in tank. I think this is a fuel problem, but I have no book on this motor to adjust carburetor float or jets if that were needed. What would the compression for the motor be? I would like to check the compression, before I spend money on a repair book. Thanks"

"I don't know what the numbers should be on your motor for a compression test, but if it gives you a good "pop" when you pull the cord, and the numbers on both cylinders are close, compression is likely ok.
Are you making sure the cap is closed on the fuel tank? It needs to build up pressure to stay running.
You say it only runs for a few seconds. I have an identical 1956 Evinrude, and I run it out of fuel when I'm done using it. I let the pressure off the tank and disconnect the fitting from the motor. At idle speed it takes about a minute for the motor to quit.
My guess would be a gummed up carb, especially if the motor has sat for a while.
Good luck. I don't think I've seen a better trolling motor than my 5.5. It's fairly light to carry, and will idle slowly all day.

Thanks Joe...I think I found it on IBOATS...Those pictures do bring back memories...My first outboard was a lightwin and I still own a 59...can't beat that weedless lower unit. I have a 1958 5 1/2 seahorse. My kids learned to waterski in back of an old 12 foot mirrocraft aluminum with a 1959 Johnson 18. My 13 Ft. Whaler sports a 1962 40hp Evinrude. I love these old motors...
