1956 evinrude 30hp lark

Picked up one of these for free to mess with. Would the electric starter work on my 1966 18 horse?Im having shoulder surgery this winter . Thanks-B

Well, yes and no. You will need a starter bracket from a 1956 15hp because it is a 6 Volt starter and the bolt spacing is different than the 12V that came later. And no, the 30hp bracket won't work at all.

Can I convert the starter to 12v? Otherwise I would have to have a separate (6v) battery,is that correct?

Just use it with 12V. It should start almost instantly, no need to grind away at it & overheat the starter. You might want to use a 12V solenoid.

12 volts really works good on that 6 volt starter. Done a few of them over the years.
