1956 7.5hp - Replacing the Water Pump

Hi

I have a 1956 7.5hp Evinrude and it needs a new water pump (the person I got the motor from rebuilt and cleaned everything all up but said he did not get around to replacing the water pump). So, I've ordered a water pump kit that has what I hope is everything I need.

My question is, what should I be careful of when doing this? And can you point me towards some good step by step instructions and videos. I am a novice when it comes to working on motors but I'm confident that with help and guidance from this forum, and a good dose of Youtube videos, I will be able to get this done.

Oh, and yes I trust the person I got the motor from, he is my brother in law and a master motor mechanic.

The powerhead needs to be removed ( 7 screws) to disconnect the shift rod.------------------Good time to inspect the critical mechanical seal at the same time.

The "powerhead" is loosely defined as the actual gasoline engine that sits on top, under the hood. You may be a novice, but your Brother-in -law master motor mechinic certainly knows this.

I had to use a little high tack on the gasket under the pump base to pass a pressure test.Replace the seals on top of the driveshaft.

Yes, but he is in Tennessee and I'm in Colorado and I figure that while I can, and will call him, I am trying to do this sort of on my own. :)

Well anyway, on that motor you have to remove the powerhead (engine) to access and disconnect the shift rod before you can remove the lower unit (where the water pump is). Once you get the powerhead off, you will see the seal that others have mentioned. That seal is absolutely vital to the future health of the powerhead and must be in good condition. Always use a new 303347 o-ring and 303355 gasket (both are parts of the seal). You will also need a new powerhead gasket. None of this stuff comes with a water pump kit.
