Need to replace top crank seal. It is a carbon seal. OMC P/N 396514. Can this be removed and replaced like a conventional seal or must the block be split?

Can the carbon seal be replaced with the seal used the following year (1956)? Sierra P/N 18-2060, a conventional oil seal.

1955 uses a spring between upper seal face and bottom of point cam. 1956 and onward, no spring.

And the correct answer is.....There were two types of seals used on that motor, according to serial number. The parts book is confusing because it shows both types at once. The two types are mated to two types of top main bearings and are NOT interchangeable without changing the bearing also. As for the carbon type, the #9 carbon seal has a #10 o-ring inside it. That assembly slides down over the crankshaft, and against the bearing. The #'s 6, 7, 8 spring and washers hold the carbon down against the bearing. The #4 cam holds the spring down. The flywheel holds the cam down. Ground-flat surfaces on the carbon and bearing make the seal air-tight as the crank rotates. The other parts shown are for the other type of seal / bearing assembly. One last note, unless the carbon is broken or chipped, there is no need to replace it. The o-ring inside is another story. It may be hardened or set, causing a leak.

This motor has the carbon seal w/ O ring. Have removed flywheel, mag plate, cam, spring. Can see carbon seal. It is intact, but is leaking. Suspect O ring has failed. Would like to remove carbon seal and O ring for inspection/replacement.

How can I remove carbon seal without damaging it? Any suggestions?

Will try lifting seal out with picks.

Motor is getting all new ignition and wires. New L/U seals and impeller. Carb cleaned, gaskets, new float, valve and fuel/air lines.
If all of that works out then it's getting some new paint and decals.

Very carefully. Seriously, the carbon is very fragile. Fortunately, there is nothing holding it in there except friction of the o-ring against the shaft. Squirt it with some WD-40 or something to try to get some slipperiness.
 
I removed carbon seal with a pick. Came out easy. O ring is slightly torn. Removed O ring from seal, very gently. Carbon seal disintegrated. Top flange of seal just fell away.

Will have to replace both seal and 0 ring. 0 ring I removed is a heavy, square shouldered ring, square in cross section. P/N 302540. Picture of 302540 on this site shows a conventional, round in cross section, ring.

Carbon seal P/N 302538 is out of stock on this site.

The quad ring seal is used in some applications, in place of the o-ring. Personally, I always use the quad ring, whichever is officially called for. The quad ring is better suited to sliding on the shaft, which is necessary as the shaft moves up in down within the bearings (which it does, slightly). If the carbon doesn't stay slid down against the bearing, it can't do it's job. Quad ring is part number 305098.
