Could someone tell me where did it came from and if that's the problem why the motor does not engage .the top part is fine (recoil) try to locate the part on your webside but, I couldn't find it.

Forgot to say there should be

Forgot to say there should be 3 of them on the underside of the recoil housing. When you pull on the recoil the centrifugal force causes them to be thrown out catching the tabs on part #3 and turns the motor over. Might need part #9 on page 11 also as these springs bring the pawl back in once the recoil returns to its resting state.

Thanks for the picture Joe. T

Thanks for the picture Joe. That would locate the recoil mechanism under the 56 model 15HP instead of the 55 model? Parts 7-10 on page 11 of the 56 model 15016. Again the plastic is available here (and lots less than the 55 model) and only need one. So if there is only the one plastic piece then someone swapped out the '55 recoil housing for a slightly newer (or at least working) one along with the flywheel. Not unusual given the age of the motor. Come to think of it the pawls on the 55 model would likely have been metal instead of plastic. Couple great things about the 50-60's OMC motor is the interchangeability of parts from year to year and even from HP to HP.

"The picture (Pg 11, Item

"The picture (Pg 11, Item 11) is a completely different manual starter than what you have pictured above. The one above requires the nylon pawl.

The other one (Pg 11, Item 11) is the type that requires what is called a ratchet which is bolted to the top of the flywheel with three bolts (as pictured). Which type flywheel do you have?

"You simply need the nylon paw

"You simply need the nylon pawl, 2 links, and the one retainer that fits in the groove of the center spindle. The nylon pawl goes on the stud with the pointed end facing left as per the picture I inserted above on March 21."

"You need: Items number 10, 11

"You need: Items number 10, 11, 12, 13 as follows.

1ea - Pawl - 203698 (#11)

gary_mc, it is possible that your motor has had a transplant of the power head. I would check for the welsh plug identifier on the block. This would be a disc about 1/2 inch to 1 inch in diameter either on the top by cylinder head or on the starboard side (in direction of travel) at the rear of the motor. At the very least your flywheel and recoil are not from the 15014 (1955 model) but you can find the parts that joereeves posted under page 11 on http://www.marineengine.com/parts/v...evinrude-johnson/ITEM_2747/ITEM_274700001.htm (the 15016 model) although the part item number in the picture doesn't match, the actual OMC part number is the same. Lots of more info would be available at http://www.aomci.org/ a club dedicated to the preservation and use of the older motors.
