1954 johnson 5.5 hp

You have to remove the powerhead to disconnect the shift rod.-------OK seems like a lot of work , but you need to look at the critical seal on top of the driveshaft anyways.---------It is not all that hard to do.

Thanks, I guess I'll need to get a service manual for that job.
 
A service manual is not really needed.-----The job is straight forward , remove 7 screws and disconnect some hoses to remove the powerhead.
