hello i replaced coils, points, wires carb kit, plugs, converted to a fuel pump, new fuel lines all in the last week, i can get the motor to start but it runs very rough.i did the 1 and 1ahalf turns on the needle valves to start to set carb and nothing works i have tore it apart and checked everything 3 times to no avail, it seems to beleaving alot of un burned gas an oil in the test barrel any thoughts thank you

These are an excellent running motor.---What procedure did you follow with installation of the pump??------------------What is compression ??----------Will spark jump a gap of 1/4" or better on both cylinders ??------------Once the motor is running you need to adjust the needles while on a boat, or with a test prop.-----------Adjust the lower one first at full throttle and then the upper one ( slow speed mixture ) at idle.-------------They do leave a lot of oil residue in a barrel.

hello yes spark is strong and i used the intake manifold to get my pulse for fuel pump by removeing the check valve and sealing one hole with j-d weld

Tim here and wondering why motors run so bad in a small test tank? Gotta open the cowl to get some fresh air into the carb. The mixture is contaminated with smoke and hydrocarbons hanging around the tank. Most cowl intake holes are small, undersized and "underneath". Try that.....you sound like a pretty decent mechanic, Clay. You have one of the best little outboards ever made.
P.S. Thanks "Race" posted few more photos on the 50h.p.

thanks for the reply im running the motor in my test tank with the cowl off and a fan in front of it to blow the exhaust away from it this little motor i just can figure it ou of re-stored probably 30 of them and never had any problems the one thing i have found is the high speed needle when i sprayed carb cleaner at the knob it would die out so i added another packing washer to it and it seem to quit sucking air there but i really had to tighten the packing nut alot more than i like its making the adjusting needle to hard to turn

Strange that you would need to tighten the jam nut that tight to prevent a leakage at that area. I assume that you are using either the cork or fiber packing washers? If not, do so, usually 2 or 3 on the slow speed needle and about 4 on the high speed if I remember right.

If not, what is the history of the motor.......was it stored without running for a long time? Did it run good before it was stored?
