1950 TN26 clutch not disengaging prop

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forum. Learned a lot searching forum.
I picked up a Johnson TN26 #848919.
Tinkered with it this weekend and was able to get it started pretty quickly. Runs really smooth.
I will be replacing the impeller next.
Besides a leaking carb, the bigger issue is that the clutch disengagement lever does not disengage the prop. Lever/cable moves fine. I tried tightening up the cable hoping it was just not set right but no success.
Can any one point me in the right direction. I'm not familiar with the mechanism and what it may take to get to the source of the problem.
Thanks in advance

First things first. Is the motor running, or at least rotating by the recoil or whatever? The clutch only works if it is rotating.

The motor does run. When running and the lever flipped out to disengage prop, the prop still spins.
With the engine stopped, I tried turning the prop by hand with clutch lever in either position and I can rotate the prop on direction but not the other. Lever has no effect.

Tab on the spring is broken or the wee lever that engages the tab is broken.

If it is the spring/lever, any chance you can direct me somewhere giving me an idea of how to get to the spring/lever for repair?

The spring you are referring to to is internal at the clutch assy?

You might find the service manual for 1922 - 1964 Johnson outboards on the Boatinfo website helpful . Sorry MarineEngine will not allow a link.

Pg 18 Lower Unit Gearcase.jpgYou will encounter the clutch spring when you do the water pump job. This is not your exact model but close enough to answer the question. #39 is the clutch spring, #29 is the lever that interrupts the tab as it rotates by.

Thanks everyone for the info. I'm sure you meant to refer to #20 as the spring.
Might be a week or so before I get into the repair. I should have the impeller by then.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks

Yep, typo on my part. #35 is the clutch spring. Works like wrapping a rope around a tree. The harder you pull, the tighter it gets.
